..............by Richard Robbins
...Jay Leslie is a builder. Brick by brick. Or more to the point, trick-by magical-trick......................................... ...Everything for me has been putting one thing together after another, building on one idea then going onto somrthing else ...The magician as opportunist? Leslie is certnily that, but in the best sense of the word.......................................... ...Leslie has a standing offer that he can escape from any confinment, any sort of restraint. Period. If it can be unlocked with a key Leslie can break out of it wiyhout a key. No sweat. He even broke out of a jail in Coraopolis on a bet with "Evening magizine in tow....After escaping from the jail, and reaping a ton of publicity form it, leslie moved on to a phelidelphia club deal. The deal, worked out by Leslieand presented to the club as a total entertainment package, was that he would promote a "Great Escape" weekend for the club making an escape every hour on the hour on one highly publicised night.......... ... |
This is what Leslie means about carrer- building. Imagine him as a snowball rolling down a snow carpeted hill going from one deal to another and each time they play off of each other.................................... ..."Concept is what I bring to a deal" said Leslie, a slender man with a bearish attitude tward life that would make even Dean Witter take note....The most risk he takes on the stage is hanging upside down 30 feet off the..... ground. He's wearing a straight jacket at the time, and the rope which serves as his suspension cord is burning ever so slowly. ...But he figures he is safe under such conditions, despite the danger appearant to his audience. And he thinks he is on solid ground back on earth. he knows what he is doing both on and off the stage.............. ...Risk is part of the business - although Leslie is quick to point out that he never puts himself in a situation where ther odds are stacked so overwelmingly that his life is in jeopardy. |
